Spirit of the 1940s – Kidderminster care home invites community to honour VE Day

A Kidderminster care home is opening its doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, from 2.00pm-5.00pm, Care UK’s Brook Court, on Oldnall Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Brook Court, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, entertainment, and fun as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s.

As part of this fun-filled open day, there will be face painting, various traditional games and competitions, as well as a tombola. Guests are also encouraged to come in their best 1940s red and white fancy dress attire.

Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, local performer Debbie Mills will be joining the celebrations to sing popular songs from the era.

Resident, Glenys, said: “It’s so important for our community to come together to remember VE Day, the sacrifice of so many of our loved ones for the freedom we share today. My memory of VE Day was of parties, food and celebrations.”
