Mariia Petrovska is a charismatic bandura player and singer, and one of the rising stars of Ukrainian music. She combines a complete mastery of the bandura (a traditional Ukrainian instrument) with a pure, emotive voice, making Ukrainian traditional music sound utterly fresh and contemporary. Mariia has won multiple all-Ukrainian and international bandurist competitions in Ukraine.
Mariia leads the volunteer organization ‘People’s Territory of Happiness’ and is a major contributor to the Cultural Forces programme. She went to the east of Ukraine in the summer of 2023, close to the war zone, to perform for Ukrainian defenders. and also featured in a powerful fundraising video which went viral on YouTube. In the UK in 2023, she played on the stage of the Eurovision Village in Liverpool, and recorded a song for a BBC news broadcast about Ukraine. She performed to great acclaim in London’s Finborough Theatre in 2024 and had two sold out concerts for Folk and Roots in London this year.
This concert is organised by Folk Inspiration as a partnership event with Invisible Visible, a new exhibition by Ukrainian photographer Natalia Sharomova and the Ukrainian Art Group at Creative Response at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to charities supporting Ukrainian people in the UK and Ukraine.
