“A classical music superstar” (Clarinet and Saxophone Magazine) and Britain's favourite clarinettist, (The Times) are just two descriptions of Emma Johnson who is one of the few clarinet players to have made a career as a soloist and is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer and lecturer. Since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of seventeen she has gone on to become one of the UK's biggest selling classical artists and is known for the diverse range of the repertoire she plays.
Her programme Clarinet Celebration explores all the major styles of clarinet music from Variations based on Mozart’s well-loved Clarinet Quintet to the romantic (Schumann and Clarke), and Poulenc’s lovely Sonata for clarinet and piano. The second half of the concert explores the jazz influence on the clarinet with works by legends such as Benny Goodman, John Dankworth and Duke Ellington, so we really hear the clarinet in all its incarnations! Emma introduces the pieces that she and pianist Greg Drott, perform in a relaxed and informative way.
