Heritage Open Day: St Barnabas Church is a remarkable, ornate church in the middle of the countryside which was funded entirely by the then Lord Ashcombe as his estate church. The church was designed by the eminent architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott and built in 1859. Lord Ashcombe developed what became the Denbies Estate through an extensive building scheme involving Denbies itself as the Main House, the church, the church school, The Rectory, The Dispensary and many cottages, all of which still exist.
Discover the church, which was built in 1859 by the family firm, Cubitts The Builders; their credentials as a master building firm are shown throughout the church, not least in the quality and quantity of decorative work and in the materials employed.
