Heritage Open Day: Bridge Cottage in Uckfield is a great example of a medieval Wealden hall house. It will be open to explore as part of the Festival with displays about the architecture and life in the house through the ages. Bridge Cottage, in Uckfield High Street, is a large high quality Wealden Hall house built around 1436. Managed by the voluntary Society Uckfield Heritage, it is used for a variety of events. It has been extensively studied and this special open day will allow visitors to explore the building to see the surviving parts of the original structure and understand how it has changed over the centuries. There will be displays about medieval building techniques and life in the building which was occupied for over 500 years. Originally in a rural location, Uckfield has expanded around it, particularly after the arrival of the railway, so it is now in the centre of the town.
