Heritage Open Day: The convict prison at PORTLAND was established in 1848 to Quarry stone for the Breakwaters creating Portland Harbour in Dorset for the Admiralty. In one week alone, more than 24,000 tons of Portland Stone were deposited in the breakwater wall to the designs of it's Architect : James Meadows Rendel - Civil Engineer, under the direction of John Tolerton Leather - Civil Engineering Contractor.
