Heritage Open Day: The story of the Native American presence in England, with stories, songs, and dialogue. Presented by Native American singer, teacher and facilitator, Rafael Montero, with a ceremony of remembrance by the statue of Pocohontas in the church grounds. The very first English colonies were established where Native Americans lived, and from that time some found their way to England at different times, often by being brought here against their will. The story of the Native American presence in England is not well known, but Gravesham has a particular connection through the fact that one of the first Native American immigrants to England, Princess Pocahontas, died here.
