Ryhope Engines Museum

Heritage Open Day: The Ryhope Engines Museum is based on the former Ryhope Pumping Station which provided water to Wearside for 100 years. This is a unique opportunity to see the wonderful Victorian beam engines working under steam power as they have since 1868. Ryhope Pumping Station is a distinctive example of the industrial architecture of mid Victorian times. Its engines show the high standards of mechanical engineering design and construction of that age. The visual appeal had not been sacrificed entirely to function, and there is finely restrained ornamentation on both the building and engines. The two giant 1868 Woolf Compound beam engines will be working with steam power provided by a hand-fired 1908 Lancashire boiler.
