Heritage Open Day: St Mary's Church, Hemyock will be open on Sunday 14th September for a display of the architecture of St Mary's. There will also be a display of the History of the Blackdown Hills through the centuries. Hemyock has a fascinating past with important national figures featuring connections to the area. A powerful Celtic community led by Simon who led the defense against the invading Saxons. Once Wessex had been established with the most powerful Saxon King, Alfred, the Blackdown Hills provided strong barriers against the marauding Vikings. When the Normans invaded in the 11th Century local manors were all ruled over by William's chosen Lords of the Manor. The local Hemyock Castle was owned by Sir John Dynham, captain of the future Edward the IV's military force.
