Winchelsea Wesley Methodist Chapel

Heritage Open Day: Open Day at the Historic John Wesley's Chapel, Winchelsea on Saturday 13th September 2025 from 10am to 5pm, with a bonus of a concert of local talent thrown in at 2pm. Entry is free all day with tea and coffee available. The Wesleyan Society was formed in Winchelsea in 1774 and this 'Preaching House' was built in 1785. John Wesley himself preached in the Chapel in 1789 from the pulpit which is seen today in the Chapel.

John Wesley visited Winchelsea on several occasions and was supportive of the local community. As well as preaching in the
'Preaching House' he also preached his final outdoor sermon under the 'Wesley' Tree that is just around the corner from the chapel, as there wasn't sufficient room for all those who wanted to hear him. He was 87.
