Heritage Open Day: An opportunity to “peep in at the doorway†and see a traditional smithy , once to be found in every village, sadly all too rare nowadays. Built in 1875, the Smithy at Mere Brow was an essential service, with the blacksmiths making and repairing all kinds of tools as well as working as farriers. It was also an important meeting place within the village and the blacksmith was often also the local dentist and barber!
After years of being used for various other businesses, the building is once again a traditional smithy. This event provides an opportunity to “peep in at the doorway†of the smithy, it is not a blacksmithing demonstration event.
