Heritage Open Day: A guided walk around the oldest and most complete town wall in Britain. It was built in response to Boudica's attack on Colchester in AD 60 and over two-thirds still remain. The walk takes in the Balkerne Gate, the largest Roman gateway in the country, and Duncan's Gate which was discovered in 1853. Also shown is Scheregate, the only surviving medieval gateway which provided access from the town to St John's Abbey to the south. The sites of all the other town gates have recently been located on the ground as part of the 'Marking the Gates' project.
The tour is led by local guide Barbara Butler.
