Heritage Service based around Rev Henry Townsend, first Minister of Pole Lane Chapel

Heritage Open Day: In 1793 Rev Henry Townsend came to Darwen as Minister of a breakaway group from Lower Chapel who had built a chapel at Pole Lane, due to irreconcilable differences. Why and what happened? Come and find out with music and costume. The Rev Townsend came into a dispute about Lower Chapel's Minister and also theological divides. This was at the time of the French Revolution, and then Napoleon's wars across Europe - Trafalgar and the loss of Nelson - the rise of hand looming, and then its rapid decline as the factory system took over, resisted violently by the Luddites. The Peterloo massacre of 1819 and so on. Who was this man? Why did he come from Cockermouth to Darwen, despite a much lower income here at Darwen? With music of this time, and words and readings, we seek to understand something of the values and spirituality of these Darreners as the 18th century closed and the 19th century dawned. There will be an 1802 Square Piano on view as well.
