St Hilda's Church

Heritage Open Day: Built in 1882, by Yorkshire architect JT Micklethwaite, designed for Anglo-Catholic worship. Amazing collection of carved and decorated woodwork. A landmark building at a major gateway into the city, close to the A63, en route from Junction 45. Discover a church which is built from the same red brick as the nearby housing, symbolising that it belongs to the community that it was built to serve. There is a unique collection of carved and painted woodwork, including a rood screen with loft (accessed via a spiral staircase), an amazing font canopy, side-screens, reredos - and much more. The quality of natural light is an important feature. It is a listed building but is not a museum.
