Heritage Open Day: Free Entry: A secret wartime airbase, now a visitor centre, was once a hub of activity for thousands of people. Outside is the grandest of English landscapes, ‘Capability’ Brown’s masterful first commission, with commanding views over the Malverns. Framed by the Malvern Hills and rolling Worcestershire landscape, Croome is sited in a gentle vale, adorned with classical stone buildings, water ways and shrubberies, all brought back from the brink of total loss to a vibrant, elegant setting just as ‘Capability’ Brown, Robert Adam and the 6th Earl of Coventry first envisioned it. A complete and unified work of art, created by vision, ambition and hard work – a labour of love and a stage crafted by the finest designers, makers and engineers of its day.
