Heritage Open Day: Visit North Lees Hall, a 16th-century tower house, surrounded by farmland, within the Peak District National Park. Open on Sunday 14 September; 11am to 3.00pm. 12pm guided walk of about 2 miles/1.5 hours through 2000 years of history in the farmland. North Lees Hall was constructed around the late 1590s by William Jessop of Broomhall, Sheffield, the architecture having probably been influenced by Robert Smythson. In 1845, when visiting her friend Ellen Nussey in Hathersage, Charlotte Bronte was shown around the Hall by George Eyre, the then tenant: thus North Lees Hall was probably a model for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre, published in 1847. The Hall was extensively restored by Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Beech in the 1960s.
