The story of Camp 61 and the Marconi monument
Heritage Open Day: The Marconi monument at Wynols Hill was built to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of radio transmissions. It was made by Italian prisoners of war based at Camp 61. Join Owen McLaughlin (Forest of Dean Local History Society) to learn more. Sadly destroyed to make way for the Wynols Hill housing estate Camp 61 was home to Italian prisoners of war during World War Two, mostly taken prisoner in North Africa. The monument was constructed out of whatever could be found by the POWs in their down time when they were not working on local farms. The inscriptions were in Italian and English reading “TO GUGLIELMO MARCONI, MAGICIAN OF THE ETHER, THE ITALIAN PRISONERS OF WAR, CHRISTMAS 1944.â€
