Heritage Open Day: Newent’s local history is told with story boards and many artefacts found
locally. Newent Market House dates from at least as early as 1668, so it is a significant historical building in its own right. In addition, attractive printed history boards tell the story of the Newent area from the Bronze Age, Roman and right up to the 21 st century. There are also archaeological finds which visitors find fascinating. We have a small collection of books for younger visitors, as well as publications by local history groups in several nearby villages. There is also a room devoted to celebrating local music-making. Music innovator Joe Meek was born in Newent’s Market Square and Rutland Boughton, a choral and classical music composer, lived locally.
