Two Westbury Churches and their history in the Dean

Heritage Open Day: The Church of St Peter, Paul and Mary occupies the same site as the Bell Tower, previously a church in its own right.
The site has a history going back to the Crusades and then the English Civil War. The main church bears evidence of the Crusades in the middle ages (1030 to 1500). The nave is in the Diocese of Gloucester, whilst the Chancel and Sanctuary are officially in the Diocese of Hereford. This anomaly arose at the time of Henry VIII when the Diocese of Gloucester was created.
Examination of the Bell Tower shows evidence of its previous attached buildings, whilst the bells are a local wonder of the power of communication.
Both buildings played a part in the Civil War with Colonel Massey and the two opposing sides having a clash here.
