United Reform Church

Heritage Open Day: A historic building born out of religious persecution in England & on the Continent, and where John Wesley preached. This seemingly plain building was originally an outbuilding of an inn called 'The Star' on Cattle Market, near the Guildhall. In the early 17th century it became the secret meeting place for dissenters, believers who did not accept the monarch as head of the church. In the 1680's they benefitted from the support of the mayor, Bartholemew Coombes. Huguenot refugees who had fled from persecution in France gave the masts of the boats in which they had crossed the Channel as pillars to support the roof, and can be seen to this day. In 1705 they bought the building & made it a Meeting House. In 1788 John Wesley preached here.
