Heritage Open Day: Tick-Tock, Time to Visit Downham Market's Legendary Town Clock! One of the most iconic features of this charming town is the Town Clock, a Gothic masterpiece and a delightful landmark that has been keeping time since 1878. Local businessman James Scott - a grocer and draper ... decided that Downham Market needed a proper timepiece and commissioned London-based William Cunliffe to design and build the clock, which was erected at a cost of £450. The clock features a cast iron octagonal base that supports a rectangular clock chamber with four illuminated dials, all in a black and white colour scheme.
Beyond its practical purpose, the Town Clock has been a focal point for social and civic gatherings.
