Pre-Raphaelite Mosaics in St John’s Church

Heritage Open Day: Come and view our unique collection of Opus Sectile mosaics including our world-famous archangels. The small, Victorian-built church of St John’s, on the Salisbury side of the town, is home to a striking and unique collection of Pre-Raphaelite mosaics, which adorn the walls of the chancel and the nave. St John’s Church is home to a collection of Opus Sectile mosaics dating between 1880 and 1912. These include panels featuring Pre-Raphaelite designs illustrating events in the life of Jesus. The chancel is extensively decorated, on both sides with large illustrations of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt on one side and Christ in Majesty on the other. Above the altar stand the four stunning archangels. There will be a guide present in the church to tell you how they were made, the history behind them and to answer your questions.
