Monks Chapel

Heritage Open Day: A chance to visit an historic Chapel with a brave and independent history. Corsham's Monks Chapel has a fascinating ecclesiastical history. It has been a centre for independent worship since it was built by the Quakers in 1662, when Parliament revised the English Prayer Book and forced ministers to use 'fixed forms of service'. Worshipers would walk up to 15 miles to get to Monks Chapel and would bring food and drink with them, using the Chapel's fireplace to cook. The Chapel's pulpit is particularly high to allow the minister to spot any troublemakers among the congregation, and there is a door under the pulpit that leads to a possible secret exit for escape if the church was raided. Come and discover this little chapel with a big history.
