Heritage Open Day: Councillor Josh Allen, elected Mayor of Hyndburn, will provide tours of Accrington Town Hall. Originally commissioned as ‘The Peel Institute’ to commemorate the life of the former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, the first prime minister from an industrial background.
The Peel Institute, now known as the Town Hall, was inaugurated on Christmas Eve in 1858. Initially, it served as an Assembly Room, providing a centre for social gatherings. Over time, it housed the Mechanics’ Institute, the Library, and even the post office. In 1878, the municipal borough of Accrington was officially incorporated. It encompassed the townships of Old Accrington and New Accrington, which merged to form Accrington Borough Council, and the town hall became its headquarters. The tour will commence with the Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Josh Allen, inside the Mayor's Parlour and will continue to the ballroom, past the bust of Sir Robert Peel and conclude in the council chambers.
