Heritage Open Day: Built in 1881 as a Primitive Methodist Chapel, Allhallowgate Methodist Church has seen continued unbroken worship for the past 144 year and is a thriving, active church within the city of Ripon. Ripon was an important and influential location for Primitive Methodism in the north of England. The first Primitive Methodist chapel in the town opened in 1821. It was built on a site in Priest Lane, although no trace of it now exists. Evidence of its former location, near the junction with St Marygate, can be seen on old Ordnance Survey maps. It was enlarged in 1841. Despite this it seems that the chapel was still not big enough, but it filled the site in Priest Lane, no trace of it now exists. It was necessary to look elsewhere for larger premises.
