Heritage Open Day: Stone fronted Victorian building with arches on Tuscan pillars, ornate carvings and gable roof topped with a stone sphere. The Lion Lodge No. 312 in Whitby was consecrated in 1797 but had been proceeded by two other Lodges with notable members over the years including Captain Robert Moorsom and Captain William Scoresby and visited by Rt Hon The Earl of Zetland M W Grand Master.
In September 1858 the foundation stone was laid at the site of the new masonic Hall in John Street by the Earl of Zetland and it was consecrated in 1859. The Whitby Gazette in its issue dated August 1859 reported: “The Consecration of the Masonic Hall. This interesting event took place on Tuesday the 16th inst. at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
