Heritage Open Day: Discover the medieval Tithe Barn in Landbeach! Check out the very vernacular timber frame and recently restored thatched roof, and learn about the barn's long history as a practical farming building. Tithe barns were built in the days when every peasant gave a tenth of his crops to the church, the contributions being stacked in the barn for winter threshing and storage. These barns were built wide, long, and tall, with thick walls to help preserve food over the winter. Once prolific across the UK, there are now only about 200 tithe barns left.
This year, the Tithe Barn will be open on Saturdays, 13 and 20 September, from 10 am to 3pm.
