Woodchester Mansion

Heritage Open Day: Visitors can see this unique unfinished Grade I listed Gothic Revival house, built 1857-67, and understand how it was constructed. Take a self-guided tour or join guided tours at 1145 and 1430. Woodchester Mansion is a house like no other. Built entirely out of local limestone for the wealthy Roman Catholic convert William Leigh between 1857 and 1867, in the Neo-gothic style, it was never completed. The construction and architectural detail of the Mansion are laid bare to visitors. The craftsmanship is of very high quality, and the building is of architectural significance at an international level. Adults can discover why the house was never finished and children can search for the carved stone creatures which inhabit the building (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult). The Mansion also houses breeding colonies of rare horseshoe bats which can be seen on a high quality video link.
