Heritage Open Day: Free entry to Colchester's Roman Circus Visitor Centre. Learn about the architecture, archaeological remains and history of Britain's only known Roman chariot-racing track. The site of the Roman circus was formally identified in 2004. It is the only known Roman circus in Britain - a monumental structure seating circa 8,000 people: it would have been used as a venue for spectator sports, predominantly chariot-racing. It was built in the early 2nd century CE and seems to have been in use for about 150 years.
The Roman circus site and visitor centre include outdoor and indoor displays.
