Heritage Open Day: The story of Scottish doctor James Lind: his life afloat and ashore with the Royal Navy, his influence on naval medicine, his importance to medical history, and how he and his story mysteriously faded from view - and eventually reappeared... Your speaker, Jane Wickenden, was for 20 years, between 2001-2021, Historic Collections Librarian at the Institute of Naval Medicine in Alverstoke. She returns to Gosport to talk about the life, work and journeys of Dr James Lind (1716-1794), the Royal Naval surgeon who was the second Chief Physician at the Royal Hospital Haslar. Against a background of the Royal Navy and naval medicine of Lind's times, you will hear about his study and treatment of scurvy, as well as his other contributions to naval medicine.
