St Martin’s Church, Dover

Heritage Open Day: St Martin’s Church was built in 1901, then known as the tin church because it had a corrugated iron roof. It continues as the parish church for Elms Vale and Maxton. Now modern and inclusive with a bright interior and a community garden. St Martin of Tours is not a stone / gothic building but brick and wood. It’s bright and cheerful. It’s been the parish church for Elms Vale and Maxton for 125 years and many local people have been married there. It’s in regular use on Sundays and hosts a vibrant toddler group, but is not otherwise usually open to the public. We have recently put an accessible toilet and coffee bar. Our garden has been converted into a community space for anyone to use for peace and quiet. Historically the building includes a communal air raid shelter and somewhere in the grounds is a barrage balloon mooring block. Tea and coffee and cold drinks will be available (donations accepted)
