Castle Drogo

Heritage Open Day: High above the Teign Gorge on the edge of Dartmoor stands Castle Drogo. Reminiscent of a medieval fortress the castle was designed and built between 1910 and 1930 by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. Inspired by the rugged Dartmoor tors that surround it, inside the castle's granite walls, the ingenuity of Lutyens's design is revealed in grand show rooms, functional servants' spaces and comfortable family rooms, perfectly suited to the lifestyle of a modern 20th-century family. Outside, hidden behind immaculate yew hedges, the garden is a perfect partnership of colourful seasonal planting with Lutyens's formal architectural design. There are many winding paths to follow into the Teign Gorge with the river flowing at the bottom. Recharge at the cafe with a traditional Devon cream tea or tuck into a slice of cake. At our gift shop and plant centre you can pick up a wide range of plants, books and gifts for every occasion.
