Heritage Open Day: We're opening St. Martin's and are looking forward to seeing old photographs of St. Martin's, and hearing the stories of growing up in Southdene. Come and see inside this post-war gem of a building, and bring old photos, stories and memories to share St. Martin's Church began in a school in 1952, before moving to a barn, then a church hall, before the current building was built in 1964 to serve the new estate of Southdene, Kirkby. The church was heavily influenced by the work of the internationally famous architect, Le Corbusier, and was designed by the Liverpool firm of architects, Gilling Dod.
The families who moved to Kirkby came from Everton and Scotland Road in Liverpool, and the new estate had a thriving life. Come and share your memories of those early days in Kirkby and what it was like growing up in Southdene. We'd love to see any photos that you have to share.
The church will be open, with old parish magazines, photos and silverware out.
