This recital presents two of Brahms' later compositions. Brahms wrote his Clarinet Trio in 1891, when he was in his late 50s and seemingly had retired from composition, however, he was introduced to a brilliant clarinettist who inspired him to write, amongst other pieces, this Trio. The first three movements invoke a mood that is by and large languid but with occasional perturbations before waking everyone up with a short, energetic, gipsy-flavoured final movement. Five years earlier he had composed his second Cello sonata, described by Steven Isserlis as being ‘the work of an older man composing music with all the passion and sweep of youth.’
Elizabeth Drew, Caroline Dale and Paul Turner present the unusual combination of clarinet, cello and piano in this performance at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon.
