Xquenda

Xquenda is the story of a young indigenous woman from rural Oaxaca, and her search for justice after the disappearance and murder of her best friend. No one seems to care due to their social and economic conditions.

Her protest is through her Poems.
Her weapon is her Words.

Through letters written while she's protesting, we get to know her life, her traditions and culture, the magical realism that is the heart of her town, and her love and connection with her ancestors and with the nature of the world that surrounds her, which, although beautiful, is not necessarily fair for women.

Xquenda is a word in ancient Zapotec which means Soul, referring to the true self of a person, and what remains on earth after death.

Accompanied by live music and recorded tracks with traditional Mexican rhythms, the piece is performed in English, Spanish, and Zapotec languages.

Based on a true story.
