Beloved of the Virgin: The City of Siena and its Art.
Our lecturer is Dr. Sally Dormer
The hilltop Tuscan town of Siena, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was arguably the most important centre of artistic patronage and craftsmanship during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, where the foundations were laid for the 15th century Renaissance. With the intention of creating the most beautiful of city republics, the Sienese government spent lavishly, fostering the talent of native artists such as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini and Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, as well as enticing other Tuscan craftsmen such as Giovanni Pisano to work in Siena contact us at info@asbetchworth.co.uk
