Our guest poets are Maggie Harris and Maggie Brookes-Butt - one born in Guyana, the other in London, but their different perspectives illuminate shared concerns and issues. Whether they are writing about the natural world, the plight of refugees or the power of women, their poems get right to the heart of the matter. They both had their 7th collections published this year.
Both are grandmothers who take the long view, from their own ancestors into an uncertain future, and both have been Royal Literary Fund Fellows. They share a deep love of language and playfulness with form.
There will be a reduced open mic slot this evening, but if you have a poem you’d like to read, do bring it and we will accommodate you if we can.
Ware Poets host monthly poetry evenings at Southern Maltings in Ware - open mic for the first half, followed by a guest poet reading. Everyone always welcome - whether to read a poem or to enjoy listening. Friendly atmosphere. Bar available.
We also organise a highly regarded annual poetry competition and enjoy running poetry events in the community.
