Temenos Chamber Choir, conducted by Patrick Craig, will present music for Advent and the Christmas season, by two composers whose anniversaries fall this year. Palestrina was born 500 years ago, in 1525. He was the supreme master of sacred choral music, and he wrote many motets exploring the themes of the Nativity.
The much-loved Estonian composer Arvo Pärt celebrated his 90th birthday this year. He is known for his simplicity and clarity of texture, with bell-like sounds. The choir will be singing his collection of Antiphons for Advent, known as the Advent Os - such as O Morning Star, O Emmanuel. These will be interspersed with Palestrina's rich choral motets, and will bring a different perspective to this Christmas concert.
