It's May 1979. Ethel and Norman Thayer arrive for their 48th summer on the shores of Golden Pond in Maine. Norman, tetchy, outspoken and pessimistic, is starting to lose his memory. He's also about to turn 80 and he's in no mood to celebrate. His long-suffering but loving wife, Ethel, is ten years younger and the cheerful flipside to Norman. When semi-estranged daughter Chelsea arrives with her new fiancé Bill and his 13-year-old son, Norman is aghast...but young and old will learn lessons from each other before September comes.
