During the reign of James 1st English music was in very good hands. A particularly popular composer of music for families to play and sing at home of an evening was Orland Gibbons. The locally based group Fantasia Viols and Voices re-creates the sights and sounds of this music making with a consort of viols – predecessors of modern string instruments – and a small choir of mixed voices. They are marking the 400th Anniversary of the composer’s death with this free afternoon concert. A good number of Orlando Gibbons’ works have proved to have staying power across the centuries – his most well-known piece being his sublimely beautiful madrigal ‘The Silver Swan’. Other pieces he wrote have continued to be sung and played right up to today. So, take a step back in time, escape the modern world and immerse yourself in this beautiful music.
