Chelmsford care home partners with theatre for dementia-accessible cin
A care home in Chelmsford has launched a community initiative aimed at creating more accessible cultural experiences for people living with dementia.
Care UK’s Manor Lodge, on Manor Road, is working in partnership with Chelmsford Theatre and Alzheimer’s Society to shape the launch of a new dementia-accessible cinema programme, designed to offer a calm, relaxed and supportive setting in which attendees can enjoy familiar films.
The care home team has provided insight and guidance based on its experience in dementia care, ensuring the screenings reflect the needs of those living with the condition.
They will feature gentler sound levels, brighter lighting and the freedom for guests to talk or move around at any point. Each film will also include an interval to allow time for comfort and movement breaks.
Sessions will be delivered by Alzheimer’s Society-trained volunteers, supported by theatre staff and clear signage to help guests feel safe and at ease.
Sheila Constable, aged 91, “I’m excited about going to the theatre! It brings people together and that matters. I can’t wait to watch The Greatest Showman as my grandchildren love this film.”
Maggie Ziemianska, Home Manager at Manor Lodge, said: “We are pleased to be working alongside Chelmsford Theatre and Alzheimer’s Society on this new dementia-friendly cinema programme. Traditional cinema environments can sometimes feel overwhelming for people living with dementia, so it has been important to help shape a setting that feels comfortable and reassuring.
“We hope these screenings will spark memories and bring enjoyment for attendees and their families, as well as encouraging more individuals, carers and families to enjoy cinema trips together in a welcoming and accessible environment.”
The first screening will take place on Tuesday 9th December with Miracle on 34th Street, followed by The Greatest Showman on 27th January, Grease on 24th February and Calamity Jane on 23rd March.
