Gary's interest in music began with the xylophone until he was given a guitar at the age of 7 years old . His musical education began at The Junior Guildhall school of Music, followed by a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. He was appointed Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music at the age of 27. His contribution to the promotion and development of the guitar culminated with his recent appointment as Head of Strings at the Royal College of Music in May of this year.
His gift of a 'good ear' for capturing lyrical folk melodies and inventive reworking of their musical themes and rhythms has produced numerous compositions that stir the imagination of students of all ages. The landscapes and folklore of differing cultures throughout the world come to life in his recitals with his use of the guitar both as a stringed and percussive instrument.
Gary has a deep commitment to the musical education of children of all ages and abilities and is sought for his expertise in instrumental competitions including the BBC Young Musician of the Year and West Sussex Guitar Club's own festival.
