Bach Winchester Voices return to St Paul's for a spectacular concert in aid of Gift of Sight: 'Sonn & Schild - Bach with Brass'.
Renowned musical director Andrew Hayman will lead three of Bach’s most vibrant cantatas, featuring authentic Baroque horns, a period orchestra and professional soloists, recreating the sound as composed by Bach 300 years ago.
The programme includes the vivid story of Christ conquering the serpent in Darzu ist erschienen, alongside the radiant Gott der Herr ist Sonn un Schild and the celebratory Christmas Oratorio part IV, written for New Year’s Day. Whilst the horn players pause for breath, the choir will sing the moving motet Der Gerechte kömmt um, and the orchestra will reinterpret the well-known Air on the G String.
Soloists include Jessie Edgar (soprano), Tamsin Jones (alto), Sebastian Hill (tenor) and Ben Hendry-Watkins (bass), with Anneke Scott (historic horn).
Professor of Ophthalmology, Andrew Lotery, will also give a short talk to welcome guests. The University of Southampton's Gift of Sight Appeal funds pioneering research into preventing blindness from common eye conditions. Support from events like this play an important role in advancing this vital work.
