The latest Bingley Gallery exhibition celebrates historic artists of the Bradford region, drawing on a collection carefully assembled over many years by gallery owner David Starley. Many of the artists trained at local Mechanics’ Institutes or the later art schools in Bradford, Keighley and Shipley. Works often focus on local landscapes. Whilst urban scenes, such as Arthur McArthur’s 1870s views of Bradford which predate even the grand Victorian architecture show dramatic change. Rural scenes of canals, rivers, farmland and moors remain more familiar. The exhibition highlights both the more traditional painters and those who broke away from the conventions of the past.
