Lost for words? Woking care home to host dementia advice event

A care home in Woking is inviting the local community to its free dementia advice event.

On Tuesday 24th February from 2.30pm–4pm, Care UK’s Greenview Hall in West End will be holding a special session as part of The Big Dementia Conversation – a nationwide initiative designed to show people how to better understand common symptoms and how it is possible to live well with the condition.

While awareness of dementia has improved, survey data from Care UK reveals that some families still face challenges when it comes to communicating with loved ones. Nearly four in 10 people (39%) said they avoid visiting relatives with dementia because of how difficult it can be to connect, and nearly all of those polled (93%) feel communication barriers prevent meaningful interaction.

To help address these challenges, Care UK has launched The Big Dementia Conversation for the third year running, encouraging practical support and greater understanding for families and communities.

The ‘Typical Signs of Ageing or Dementia’ session at the care home on Streets Heath will be led by Dementia champion Edna Hullana. The event will explore common indications of ageing, how symptoms differ from dementia and practical guidance on how to live well with the condition.

Meera Govindapillai, Home Manager at Greenview Hall, said: “Since we first opened the doors to our care home, we’ve been committed to making Woking a more dementia-friendly place.
