No One’s Land (Forum Theatre)

No One's Land (Forum Theatre)

Following a sold-out run in January, No One’s Land returns to the Etcetera Theatre as part of the Women Writers Festival, supported by Arts Council England. This bold, immersive theatre experience doesn’t just tell a story — it hands the power to the audience.

No One’s Land is a Forum Theatre performance that follows Bahar, a Turkish woman in her mid-thirties who flees years of domestic abuse and death threats from her ex-husband. Hoping to survive and reunite with her young daughter, she escapes to the UK hidden in a lorry arranged by smugglers. Forced to work for those who brought her, Bahar is unknowingly drawn into a criminal network and accused of carrying drug money. Arrested, she is detained in an immigration centre, where the play begins.

Inside detention, Bahar is reduced to a case number. A tense scene unfolds between Bahar, an interpreter, and a lawyer, exposing distance, procedure, and power.

As a Forum Theatre piece, No One’s Land invites the audience to intervene directly, offer suggestions, and change the dialogue between the characters. By stepping in, spectators are asked to imagine alternatives: What could have been done differently, who is truly listening, and how might systems be transformed to protect rather than punish people like Bahar?

Audience feedback after last sold-out run:

Theatre can go beyond storytelling to actively involve audiences in important social issues. I hope more people can experience it.

Incredible collective experience. I felt how much more powerful it is to discuss and enact/explore humanisation/dehumanisation together in a room.

I loved it! Great audience discussions, appreciated the knowledge and care in the room, the skill of the actors, feel angry at the futility of the system - what can we do? Those with decision making power should see this forum! The forum inspired a lot of passion. Borders are so harmful!
