Easter Uprising: Urvashi
Urvashi is an independent London-based collective, formed in January 2023. Inspired by the band's shared love for traditional and modern music, they draw equally from Indian Qawwali, Arabic Tarab, modal jazz and hard rock. Their tracks layer both original melodies and fresh interpretations of traditional songs, over grooves reimagined from different musical backgrounds, combined with extensive improvisation. In recent months, Urvashi have been undertaking significant artistic development, investigating how their love of modal jazz and devotional music traditions can engage with UK rave culture, specifically drum and bass and techno. Drawing inspiration from artists who bridge electronic and jazz traditions, the collective is developing an entirely new performance practice that translates electronic dance music into improvisation-led formats.
