Erato’s May concert sets the scene with the vibrant opening of Thomas Arne’s Symphony No.2. Haydn’s famous Farewell Symphony No.45 provides an element of drama in which the string players leaving early was a pointed hint to his employer.
After the interval strings are again centre stage with the serene, noble writing of Sibelius’ Andante Festivo for Strings. The lively finale of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola is a joyous way to round the off evening. It is a masterpiece of musical dialogue in which the two soloists converse with each other and the orchestra in one of the composer’s most richly expressive works.
