New Friendship Society in Walsall
For many people, it can be hard to find others who share the same interests, whether that’s going for a walk, visiting a local café or simply getting out and about for the afternoon. Groups like ours give people the chance to do those things together.
Black Country Oddfellows members get together regularly in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Wednesbury enjoying coffee mornings, games and quizzes. Members are also encouraged to meet up for walks, day trips and meals at local restaurants.
Beryl Smith, 90 years old, is a member of the Walsall Social Group. For Beryl it’s a chance to get out and meet new people and make new friends after losing her husband, Les, a few years ago.
She said: “I was born in Walsall and have lived here all my life, so joining the local group just made sense, it’s only 10 minutes up the road from me. It’s a lovely place to sit, have a cuppa and a proper chat.
“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and going to the monthly catch-ups. It gets me out of the house, and I always come home feeling happier.
“I have some mobility issues, so it means a lot that the group is so welcoming and accessible. The Starbucks café inside Sainsburys is a great setting too, the staff are always friendly, and it’s nice being somewhere relaxed and surrounded by lovely people. And the best part is that I’m making genuine friends here.”
As well as attending its events, Black Country Oddfellows members can access a variety of benefits including care and welfare support and a travel club. There are also opportunities to volunteer and take part in fundraising initiatives.
The Oddfellows also hosts around 60 free online events every month that are open to everyone, including a monthly virtual open day where people can learn more about its friendship groups.
