Marks of the Past: Discovering Medieval Graffiti in Winchester and Bey

Join Hampshire History Trust and the Hampshire Medieval Graffiti Project for an illuminating look at the hidden marks left behind by medieval hands.

Since its launch in 2016, the volunteer-led project has been uncovering centuries-old inscriptions across Winchester and the wider county, revealing stories carved into stone that have long gone unnoticed.

Project coordinator Karen Wardley will share some of the most intriguing discoveries made so far. Formerly Collections Manager with Southampton City Council’s arts and heritage service and now a trustee of King John’s House and Museum in Romsey, Karen brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for uncovering the county’s overlooked heritage.

As Karen says, “This project has given me the perfect excuse to explore our county’s rich heritage and to discover intriguing ancient marks previously hidden in plain sight.”
